breadcrumbs

This term relates back to the child’s fairy tale of Hansel and Gretel, where Hansel left a trail of bread crumbs to enable him to find his way home. It is also sometimes known as a bread trail or crumb trail.

In a computer interface involving navigation through data or pages, breadcrumbs can be a useful mechanism for retracing steps. As each choice is made it appears at the top of the page and to the right of the previous option, leaving a visual trail of the path taken. At any point, the user can retrace his or her steps to any previous point visited. For example:

Home : Products : Books
