card sorting
Card sorting is a technique used to investigate how users group items to enable the development of structures (such as menu’s) that will maximise the probability of users finding what they are looking for on a web site. At it’s most basic, users are give a set of individual cards containing the written names of the items to be sorted, they are simply asked to group them into piles putting the cards that think go together in the same pile. As an additional step they may be asked to ascribe labels to their groups. The results are evaluated using statistical cluster analysis and can be used to determine where items should be positioned on a web site and which items are perceived as being related and hence should be grouped together. Card sorting is an extremely effective way of determining users ‘cognitive models’ in a way that avoids directly asking them.
