competitive benchmarking

The process of measuring an interface (most often a website or software interface) against competitive or competing websites. A set of criteria are designed to measure the interface for key performance factors (such as ease of use, speed of use, error rates, etc.) and are then applied to each interface involved. This is undertaken with the goal of improving competitive edge.

Competitive benchmarking is often used to see how one website is doing against competitive sites. It is an extremely efficient method of understanding where competing sites have an advantage and how that advantage can be best overcome.
