What is User Profiling?
The
process of identifying and categorising your user audience, gathering
statistics on them, and then producing a realistic user persona for each
- realistic faces, names and characteristics - and can be focussed on
during requirements, design and testing phases.
Why you need it
You need to build what your customers need - but who are your customers? What do they need? Are they technically advanced or computer illiterate? User profiling helps you to answer these questions.
What we do
Gather all internal information on your users, including user feedback, survey results, customer support information, market research, etc. Working with your internal teams we then analyse this data (and gather more if required), before creating realistic profiles for each segment of the user audience.
In detail
You probably have a lot of information on your users within your organisation already, from sources such as:
- Customer support and call centre databases.
- Knowledgebases.
- Market research.
- Surveys and questionnaires.
- Product champions and product managers.
- Sales databases and sales contacts.
Our first step is to gather this information and collate it into a coherent picture of your users. This is then broken into unique and individual user profiles and the data for each profile is placed in a user profile document. Depending on how much data there is within your organisation, we may need to undertake further research steps (such as a survey) to gather more.
Deliverables
- One user profile document per profile, including:
- A name and picture for this persona
- Overview and description of this persona.
- Description of relevant technology used (for example use of the Internet if for an Internet application).
- Overview of the goals for this persona.
- Overview of the concerns for this persona.
- Population characteristics for this user profile.
