Why you need it
When moving a piece of software into a new country, cultural differences can easily lead you into hot water, especially when your content needs to appear in a different language. Even tiny changes in the words used can lead to confusion and a loss of meaning.
For example when Pepsi translated it's famous slogan "Come alive with the pepsi generation" into Taiwanese it read"Pepsi will bring your ancestors back from the dead" - not exactly the product endorsement they were looking for.

About translation
When a business translates an important document, they are literally at the mercy of their translator. You may be fortunate and have a member of staff who is gifted linguistically in both languages and has the required writing, editing, and proof-reading skills, but before making this judgment call however, here's a good test to determine if your employee is up to the task. First, they must be native speakers of the language into which they are translating. Second, have them write a marketing piece or business letter in English. If they can pass these two tests, they will probably suffice. Remember, a poorly translated document can mean the difference between an international success and a complete failure.
